Seasick Steve (Steven Gene Wold) is very unique being, as unique as they come. I heard of him only when the CD I Started Out With Nothin and I Still Got Most of it Left came out in 2008.

Seasick has been around awhile, born in 1941 in Oakland, California, and has been playing guitar since he was eight. He has been many things in his life, including a music producer (Modest Mouse), and in his own words:

Hobos are people who move around looking for work, tramps are people who move around but don't look for work, and bums are people who don't move and don't work. I've been all three.

That is a long time being a nobody. The world discovered Seasick's charm and music when he performed on the BBC's Jools Holland Show on New Year's Eve 2006. You can catch the legendary performance on YouTube.

So I haven't talked about the CD yet!

It really is more about the man behind the music, and then the music stands on its own too.

Just like Seasick's other two CDs we have in the CKUA Library, Dog House Music is a great album. Released in 2006, it is Seasick's third full length album.

Seasick Steve is a true troubadour, though he would prefer to be called a "song and dance man." Each track on the album is a mini-movie with a great story, told (sung) passionately in the gruff voice of the character who lived these songs.

And then there is the music - slide guitar played like a madman on a mission.

Seasick's guitars have a lot of personality too, a three string guitar he calls "The Trance Wonder" has a major role in the mix. Words will never describe the magic that is Dog House Music - just take a listen and you would be hooked!
