CD of the Week

CD: Doughboys, Playboys and Cowboys: The Golden Years of Western Swing
Various Artists
Label: Proper

Reviewed by Roy Forbes,
Host of Roy's Record Room

Listen to samples from Doughboys, Playboys and Cowboys:

OSAGE STOMP - Bob Wills & Texas Playboys - 1935
DOWN BY THE O-H-I-O - Milton Brown & His Musical Brownies - 1935
TRUCK DRIVER'S BLUES - Cliff Bruner & His Boys - 1939

If you're curious about the deep roots of rockabilly, rock and roll and current Western Swing groups like Asleep At The Wheel, check out this 99 track treasure trove of early Western Swing - circa 1932 to 1947. As the ad-blurb says, this set "tells the story of Western Swing - the vibrant music that blended jazz with stringbands, took in pop music & the blues and pioneered amplification……contained an authenticity and continues to appeal and inspire".

You'll hear loads of hot numbers by well known WS trailblazers like Bob Wills, Milton Brown and Bill Boyd as well as lesser-known folks like the Modern Mountaineers, Tune Wranglers etc. And, although the lyrics to a few of these ancient tunes may jar the modern ear with their sexual and racial stereotyping, the 'take off solos' on all of these tracks are exuberant and groundbreaking. Exhilarating stuff and perfect for fans of Roy's Record Room, the show where we dig through the past to energize the future.

I'll feature Doughboys, Playboys and Cowboys on the March 15th edition of Roy's Record Room. Tune in then to find out what the fuss is all about.
